About The Singing Christmas
Tree
Affectionately known as "The Tree", the event has
become as much a part of the Christmas season as parades, gifts and
lights. Since 1983, the members of Chillicothe Baptist Church have
presented The Singing Christmas Tree. "The Tree" is intended as more than
a musical program to be heard and seen. It is planned to lead in a
spiritual experience of praise and commitment during the Christmas season.
"The Tree" is a 10 tier tree made from angle iron and
channel iron weighing over 3,000 pounds and is capable of supporting 100
adults who stand on wooden platforms. It has 1,800 lights, 240 pieces of
greenery, the width is 25 feet and the top of the star reaches 31.5 feet.
The capes the choir members wear required 200 yards of
material. Backdrop material includes 42 yards of black material, 120
inches wide, and 22 yards of canvas, 120 inches wide. We have not
attempted to estimate the thousands of man-hours that have gone into
planning, construction, decorating and rehearsing for the tree.
Musical preparations begin each September, and tree
construction begins immediately after Thanksgiving. The Singing Christmas
Tree was the brain-child of our Pastor, Rev. John H. Burris, who said the
idea came after seeing a similar presentation before moving to
Chillicothe.
Over the past 21 years we have had over 200 services
and over 5,000 recorded decisions made for Christ. The tree has been seen
by over 80,000 people.
Since its inception, The Singing Christmas Tree has
captivated both children and adults to become a favorite seasonal
experience. Rev. Steve Huff, Minister of Music at Chillicothe Baptist
Church, has directed the program for the last four years.
